Embroidery Guide: Ari, Zardozi and Tilla
What the names on a luxury label actually mean — the hand techniques behind the detail.

Ari
Ari is chain-stitch embroidery worked with a hooked needle. It produces fine, fluid lines — floral vines, delicate motifs — and is often the fastest way to recognize a hand-embroidered piece.
Zardozi
Zardozi is metal thread work in gold and silver, a technique with Mughal roots. It is heavy, richly dimensional, and typically reserved for bridal and formal occasion wear.
Tilla and sequin work
Tilla uses flat metallic ribbon to outline motifs. Sequin work adds light and movement. A well-made piece combines several techniques — the layering is part of the craft.
How to care for embroidery
Always dry clean embroidered pieces. Store flat or hanging in a breathable bag, away from humidity and direct light, and never fold over heavy zardozi seams.
